The social, economic, and political forces that have influenced nursing and nursing education. Nursing theory, concepts central to nursing, and the work of selected nurse theorists will be discussed.
The focus of this course is on the health care delivery system, the financing of health care, legal issues in nursing, how the health care delivery system affects nursing and how nurses can effect social change.
The influence of culture on health and illness. Native-American, Asian, African-American, and Hispanic cultures will be examined as well as the student’s own cultural heritage and beliefs.
The course will cover interviewing techniques, history taking, selected physical examination techniques, assessment of mental status, and assessment of pediatric and elderly clients.
Major global health problems will be discussed with particular emphasis on malnutrition, AIDS, infectious diseases, and the effect of poverty and inequality on health.
An introduction to qualitative and quantitative nursing research. Students will develop the knowledge necessary to read and critically evaluate research findings in order to provide evidence-based nursing care.
An introduction to ethical theory and practice with a focus on its application to the nursing profession. Following a survey of philosophical ethics, the student will analyze noted articles, trends, and case studies that illumine the ethical issues a nurse confronts.
Health promotion, disease prevention, and health restoration as it is applied to families, aggregates, and communities in a diverse population. Students will learn to assess the health status and needs of families and communities and plan appropriate nursing interventions.
Students will apply community health nursing concepts to the provision of nursing care of a local population or aggregate. Students will identify a community health problem or need and undertake an investigation of that problem or need. The students will utilize the nursing process to assess, diagnose, and plan and evaluate potential interventions.
The application of information technology to nursing science. Topics include decision-making, assessment and implementation of information systems, confidentiality and security of information, and electronic communication.
This course is intended to address the topic of management at different levels. The most broad of these levels is the management process. The process consists of planning organizing, staffing, leading and controlling. The course also addresses the managing of people in one-on-one situations through he use of behaviorally-based management training sessions.
The course will cover a range of statistical topics from descriptive statistics to one-way ANOVA with a focus on choosing appropriate statistical methods, interpreting computer output and applying fundamental statistical principles. Students will read nursing journal articles, interpret the study objectives and explain the experimental design, the nature of the data collected, the reported statistics and any associated graphs and tables.
This is the last course in the nursing curriculum. Students will reflect on their definitions of the major nursing concepts and how they may have changed over the course of the program. Each student will conduct an independent study of a topic of interest. The emphasis is on integration of nursing theory and research in an in-depth exploration of an aspect of nursing care.
