Environmental Timeline

  • 1970 Environmental Studies Program initiated.

    • 1972 Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute founded.

  • Regional problem-solving workshops held on local impacts of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
  • 1973 Native American Studies program and outreach established.
  • Regional environmental internships offered through institute.
  • 1974 College adopts an institutional focus on environmental liberal arts.
  • 1975 Launched Lake Superior Tomorrow program to promote citizen involvement in lake-wide planning programs.
  • 1976 Training for citizen participation in community planning begins.
  • 1978 A planning meeting involving municipal officials, developers, and local residents is held promoting joint ownership and solutions between residents and developers.
  • Start of LoonWatch Program: training citizens to monitor sensitive waterfowl.
  • First program on spirituality and environment.
     
    • 1981 Construct new building for institute, which features sustainable design principles.

  • Begin community education program on energy conservation.
  • 1983 First community education programs on acid rain.
     
    • 1985 Start of the Apostle Island School.

  • 1987 Timber Wolf Alliance program started to promote citizen involvement in restoration of timber wolves to northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.
  • 1989 First teacher training program on infusing Ojibwe world views in educational curricula.
  • 1991 Hosted “Campus and the Biosphere” conference.
  • 1992 Began as U.S. secretariat for Lake Superior Binational Forum to promote citizen involvement in program to virtually eliminate discharges of nine critical pollutants into Lake Superior.
  • 1993 College and institute receive the national award for environmental achievement from Renew America.
  • Offered series of regional community dialogues on community planning for sustainable development.
  • 1994 Issued first SmartWood regional guidelines for sustainable forest management in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
  • Began “Zero Discharge Campus” project.|
  • Started Green Star program to recognize area businesses that adopt conservation practices
  • 1996 Start of inland lake sustainability project.
  • 1998 Start of the Northern Forest Restoration program to promote use of native plants and limit spread of exotic species.
    • Opened the McLean Environmental Living and Learning Center, a residential building for more than one hundred students that features sustainable design principles.

  • 1999 Hosted Wilderness Horizons conference.
  • 2000 Started program to promote community involvement in Superfund environmental remediation of contamination in Lake Superior.
  • Completed SmartWood certification assessments for more then one million acres of tribal, county, state and private industrial forestlands for sustainable forest management.
  • 2001 Started Land Stewardship Services program to help landowners to assess their land resources and to develop management plans.
